'Pixels' is more of an insult than ode to Pac-Man
When you're a film critic, you are occasionally assailed by one of two overwhelming urges: first, to quit, and second, to punch Adam Sandler in the face.

Walking the Australian Outback in a shirt and undies looks impossibly beautiful
What would compel a young woman to walk almost 1,700 miles across the Australian Outback, with only a dog and a quartet of camels for company? As real-life nomad Robyn Davidson (played by Mia Wasikowska) says at the start of "Tracks" — director John Curran's handsome biopic — "I believe that when you've been stuck too long in one spot, it's best to throw a grenade where you are standing and jump, and pray."

Young British directors take Tokyo by storm — but why?
This year it's quite noticeable how many non-Japanese are directing plays in Tokyo — not frequent and famed visitors such as David Leveaux, Robert Lepage and Simon McBurney, but relative unknowns here making their debuts at two leading large commercial theaters that almost always feature Japanese dramatists.

Should Adam Sandler be slapped for 'The Cobbler'?
There have been times when I've thought that the reason I was put on the Earth was to keep a strict watch on Adam Sandler. There he was, being his rude, crude, fidgety self with bad posture, and there I was in the screening room, ready to jump into the movie to smash him over the nose with a fly swatter. It's amazing how Sandler still has a career after all his attempts to flush it down the toilet, and in my book he heads the list of "Incredible Hollywood Job Survivors," with Johnny Knoxville coming in a distant second.

Begin Again: 'Rekindling platonic love'
You know when a boy and girl meet, hit it off, but keep the relationship platonic — and it's sweet and memorable forever? This practically never happens in the movies. The last time it did (as far I can recall) was in "Once" back in 2006, directed by Ireland's John Carney.

The Guest: 'Outlandish plotting and an ever-increasing body count'
The first half of "The Guest" feels inspired by "The Return of Martin Guerre" (1982) or its Hollywood remake, "Sommersby" (1993), but set in a post-Gulf War milieu.

Singin' ballet star leads top show's Tokyo cast
Any pantheon of classic Western musical comedy films would include 1952's "Singin' in the Rain" starring the legendary actor and dancer Gene Kelly. Set in late- 1920s Hollywood as it was transitioning from silent films to talkies, it depicts a romance between an established leading man named Don Lockwood (Kelly) and novice actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds).

Extroverts fail, and introverts flounder, but the rest of us will probably succeed
Spend a day with any leader in any organization, and you'll quickly discover that the person you're shadowing, whatever his or her official title or formal position, is actually in sales. These leaders are often pitching customers and clients, of course. But they're also persuading employees, convincing suppliers, sweet-talking funders or cajoling a board. At the core of their exalted work is a less glamorous truth: Leaders sell.
