Tokyo this week kicked off its final preparations and began counting down the days to the World Athletics Championships, which begin Sept. 13.

The championships are being held at National Stadium, which was completed in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Since the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those Games into 2021 and resulted in them taking place behind closed doors, this year’s world championships will be the biggest athletics event yet to be held at the stadium with a full complement of spectators.

While the mid-September climate is likely to be milder than what athletes faced in August 2021, organizers are making a point of highlighting the measures being implemented to safeguard spectators from the heat. Organizing committee head Takashi Takeichi laid out several details at a news conference this week.
