Former Yokohama B-Corsairs standout Omar Reed was the first pick in the fifth round of the 2016 NBA Development League Draft on Sunday.

The Iowa Energy, the Memphis Grizzlies' D-League affiliate, selected the 29-year-old swingman.

The 2016 D-League season tips off on Nov. 11. The D-League draft consisted of six rounds.

The Energy are led by first-year coach Matt Woodley. (Their last sideline supervisor was Bob Donewald Jr., whose father, Bob Sr., was an assistant on legendary bench boss Bob Knight's staff on the 1976 unbeaten Indiana University national championship-winning squad.)

Reed, now 29, starred for the B-Corsairs during the 2013-14 bj-league season. He played in 52 regular-season games and averaged 15.9 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals.

In a February 2014 interview with The Japan Times, then-B-Corsairs coach Michael Katsuhisa analyzed Reed's role as a team leader.

"Omar's versatility and ability to do many different things on the court are extremely important to our team's success," Katsuhisa told The Japan Times. "We look to him to be our glue guy. He can pass, he can shoot, and he can be good in the pick-and-roll as the ball handler or as the screener.

"He understands the game, can see where rotations are coming from and how to make the right play. He has the potential to help (point guard) Kenji (Yamada) quarterback our offense, and we need him to be more of a vocal leader so that he can do that. He is also one of the best rebounders in the league."

Reed went on to play for the Hiroshima Dragonflies for the first half of the 2014-15 NBL season. In 28 games, he averaged 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

Since leaving the B-Corsairs, Reed, who attended Bluefield (Virginia) College, an NAIA institution, has also spent time on pro teams in Venezuela and Argentina.

Reed already has considerable experience playing in the D-League, appearing in 68 games over three seasons. He played for the Austin Toros in the 2011-12 season and for the Maine Red Claws in the 2011-12 and 2014-15 campaigns. He averaged 5.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.8 steals in 16.3 minutes a game.

Reed, who was with the Boston Celtics during the 2013 NBA Summer League in Orlando, began his post-collegiate career with a semi-pro team, the Medway Park Rangers, in England in 2010.
