Uchimura takes first World Cup title

Three-time all-around world champion Kohei Uchimura outclassed a field of elite gymnasts to capture his first World Cup title Sunday.

Uchimura collected 93.565 points for the men’s all-around competition at Ryogoku Kokugikan, finishing 3.467 ahead of runnerup Philipp Boy of Germany, while Daniel Purvis of Britain was third with 89.631. Teenager Shogo Nonomura placed fourth with 89.297.

“I am glad that I could get through all six routines without a big mistake, but unfortunately I couldn’t execute my signature landing,” said Uchimura. “But I enjoyed the different atmosphere of Ryogoku Kokugikan, especially with the suspended roof.”

Uchimura came top in the floor exercise, rings, vault and parallel bars and never trailed. Purvis won the World Cup series title for the year.
