DORTMUND, Germany (Kyodo) Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa was given a rousing reception in his Bundesliga debut with Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, but the show belonged to Michael Ballack who helped Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-0 win in their season opener.

Kagawa put Leverkusen under early pressure and had a chance to put Dortmund in front in the 10th minute, charging into the area before goalkeeper Rene Adler arrived just in time to deny the 21-year-old.

"Everyone tends to get tense in the opening game of the season and you can count the cost of missing chances like that. It hurts," said Kagawa.

"I was pretty excited when I was warming up, but think I was able to keep cool and play as I normally do."
