AUCKLAND (Kyodo) Former world No. 4 Kimiko Date-Krumm, making her first WTA tournament appearance overseas in 13 years, was defeated by American Jill Craybas in straight sets in the first round of the ASB Classic on Monday.
The 38-year-old Date-Krumm, who surprised the tennis world by coming out of retirement last year, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Craybas after receiving a wild-card entry.
Date-Krumm dropped the first four games before rallying within 5-4 in the first set and was able to hold serve only once in the second set.
“My opponent wasn’t the type who tries to overpower you but she played a smart game,” said Date-Krumm. “I was in shape to play but practice is different from an actual game.”
