Former world No. 4 Kimiko Krumm-Date won the national singles title on Saturday only seven months after coming out of retirement.
The seventh-seeded Krumm-Date defeated ninth-seeded Yurika Sema 6-3, 6-3 in the final in her first appearance at the national championships since she won her second consecutive singles title in 1992.
“Once I decided to return to competitive tennis, this tournament came to my mind naturally,” Krumm-Date said.
“I had said my goal was to win the title. But to be honest, I never expected I could reach the final or I could win the championship. I’m moving better on the court day by day.”
