New Zealand’s Waitakere United want retired former Japan international Hidetoshi Nakata to play for them at this year’s Club World Cup in Japan, Japan Football Association chief Saburo Kawabuchi said Sunday.

Waitakere last month won the right to represent the Oceania region in the Club World Cup in December after defeating Kossa FC in the O-League final. Kawabuchi said the JFA had received a request from Waitakere for Nakata’s services.

Veteran striker Kazuyoshi Miura and Teruo Iwamoto have played for Oceania teams at past Club World Cups after inking short-term deals.

Miura played for Australia’s Sydney FC in the 2005 edition while fellow former international Iwamoto played for Auckland City at the 2006 event.
