NUREMBERG, Germany – Feyenoord midfielder Shinji Ono converted a first-half penalty to lead Japan’s Under-23 squad to a 7-0 victory over the youth team of German regional league side Fortuna Duesseldorf in a warmup match for the Athens Olympics.
In his first game since joining the Olympic team as an “over-age” player, Ono opened the scoring after 11 minutes with his spot kick and set up Japan’s second by Cerezo Osaka striker Yoshito Okubo.
Japan also got two goals from Tatsuya Tanaka and one goal each from Sota Hirayama, Daiki Takamatsu and Naohiro Ishikawa.
ZEIST, Netherlands (Kyodo) Striker Mio Otani scored in each half Friday to give Japan a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in a warmup match for the women’s Athens Olympics soccer tournament.
Otani put Japan ahead in the 36th minute on a pass from Eriko Arakawa before slotting home her second 26 minutes into the second half in a match that wrapped up Japan’s training camp.
