TOYOAKE, Aichi Pref. – Second pick Sunningdale produced a stunning late burst to edge favorite Durandal by a neck and win his first Grade One race at the 34th running of the Takamatsunomiya Kinen in Aichi Prefecture on Sunday.
Ridden by Yuichi Fukunaga, 5-year-old Sunningdale timed his charge to perfection on the 1,200-meter Chukyo Racecourse turf as he came storming out of the pack to breeze past early leader Gallant Arrow and cross the finish line in 1 minute, 7.9 seconds.
Victory for Sunningdale was worth 94 million yen.
