Toru Taniguchi made a key birdie on the 16th hole Sunday to hold off China’s Zhang Lianwei for a one-shot victory at the rain-shortened Acom International.

Taniguchi closed with a 1-under-par 70 on his way to his third title of the year and sixth overall with a 16-under 197 total.

Zhang, who became the first Chinese professional golfer in 1994 and has won nearly a dozen titles on the Asian circuit, finished one stroke adrift at 15-under 198 for his best result in Japan.

Takahashi rallies

TOMIYA, Miyagi Pref. (Kyodo) First-round leader Mihoko Takahashi shot a final-round 3-under 69, 5-under 211 overall, at the Miyagi TV Cup Dunlop Ladies Open on Sunday to claim a two-stroke victory over South Korea’s Ko Woo Soon in the 60 million yen event.
