TOEFL ranks individual ability

Regarding the March 31 editorial, “Testing English versus teaching it“: I wonder why people who quote Educational Testing Service data ranking each country by people’s scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language overlook the fact that the TOEFL test provides accurate scores at the individual level but is not appropriate for comparing countries.

    That would have to be one of the worst sentences Ive ever had to read, and a fine example of one of the biggest problems with Japanese English instructors in Japan. The show off mentality. Do you really think making something sound complicated is a sign of mastership? “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Albert Einstein. Take a step back from yourself.

  • I’m starting to worry about Japan’s future. This kind of narrow-minded thinking only speaks for absurdity.
