I feel the same way all Japanese people must be feeling after the horrific attack in the Akihabara district of Tokyo (June 8). I used to live in Tokyo many years ago and visited this exciting, vibrant area many, many times. I cannot believe so many innocent people lost their lives due to the anger and frustration with life that a 25-year-old man felt.

What is so scary is that it was so random and senseless. After taking so many lives, will the attacker feel better about life? About himself? He obviously does not care about how many families now are distraught over losing their loved ones.

I think about the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children of these victims. They will suffer the rest of their lives because of this sudden outburst of violence. My heart hurts for all of those family members. I know I speak for all Canadians, when I say we are very saddened by this tragedy.
