The review of the new movie “The Departed” in the Jan. 19 issue of The Japan Times fails to credit the original movie “Infernal Affairs,” which director Martin Scorsese simply remade.
While I dislike the way the media in America feels it has to remake foreign movies rather than expose American audiences to foreign cinema directly, I appreciate that the powers that be saw fit to have someone talented remake “Infernal Affairs.” While not as good as the original, in my opinion, I felt that Scorsese did a much better job than other directors have done with movies such as “The Grudge” and “Shall We Dance?”, which I felt were utterly horrible remakes.
I recommend that anyone and everyone watch “Infernal Affairs” to get a sample of high-quality Asian cinema.
