The chances for Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi to be elected Japan’s first female prime minister next week have increased following progress made at talks of a possible coalition between her party and Osaka-based Nippon Ishin no Kai on Friday.
Takaichi and Nippon Ishin co-leader Fumitake Fujita led a second round of discussions between both parties during the day to coordinate policies for a coalition agreement.
“We took a lot of steps forward today. We are at the point of figuring out if we can take just one more step forward together,” said Fujita after the meeting, adding that Nippon Ishin will decide soon whether it will back Takaichi in the parliamentary vote for prime minister on Tuesday and join forces with the LDP.
