A company in Ukiha, Fukuoka Prefecture, is pioneering what it calls a “grandma business” by operating unique eateries where elderly women, some with dementia, welcome guests with homestyle cooking.
The firm, Ukiha no Takara, operates three eateries called “Ba-chan Kissa” ("Grandma’s Cafe") — one in the city of Kasuga and the other two in the city of Fukuoka's Jonan and Sawara wards. At the Jonan outlet, which opened in May, women with dementia are working to cook and serve meals to customers.
One day in July, a reporter visited the outlet in Jonan’s Umebayashi district for lunch.
