A tropical cyclone turned into Tropical Storm Peipah off the east coast of the island of Amami-Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture at around 3 a.m. Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The tropical storm brought heavy rain to the Kyushu and Shikoku regions. In Tsuno in Miyazaki Prefecture, a six-hour rainfall that lasted until 7 a.m. Thursday brought 147 millimeters of rain to the town.

The agency has warned of heavy rain, strong winds and high waves as a result of Tropical Storm Peipah, which is forecast to approach Miyazaki and neighboring Kagoshima later on Thursday.

After nearing Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula in western Japan, the tropical storm is expected to travel east off the Tokai area and the Kanto region. It will then likely turn into an extratropical cyclone by Saturday morning.
