It’s been twists and turns for the past few days for Takeshi Niinami.

On Monday, he resigned as chairman and CEO of Suntory Holdings after he became the target of a police investigation over allegations that he had supplements that contained illegal cannabidiol substances in Japan. The news surfaced on Tuesday, with Suntory’s president and vice president explaining the decision behind Niinami’s resignation.

On Wednesday, Niinami faced a flood of reporters in a news conference as head of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives (Keizai Doyukai), during which he maintained his innocence and said he was unaware the supplements in question had components deemed illegal in Japan.
