Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama said he offered to resign from his position Tuesday, following a three-hour plenary session with party lawmakers from both chambers of parliament.

Saying he has to take responsibility for the LDP’s loss in an Upper House election in July, Moriyama said he will now entrust his future to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who also serves as party chief.

“I sincerely apologize for failing to meet people's expectations,” Moriyama said. ”From now onward, as a party member holding a seat in parliament, I’ll do my utmost to restore trust in the party and contribute to its success.”
