Tokyo Olympic organizers have given up on a plan to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at competition venues during the global sports event, an official with knowledge of the matter said late Tuesday.

In an about-face, the organizing committee made the decision after the plan to permit the sale by putting in place some restrictions came under criticism from the public, medical experts and both ruling and opposition lawmakers.

Organizers had planned to allow alcoholic beverages to be sold during the global sports event but with restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, sources said earlier.
