The Small and Medium Enterprise Agency has decided to compile by the end of fiscal 2019 a list of some 10,000 entrepreneurs it can introduce to schools that are offering entrepreneurship education, it has been learned.
The agency hopes that the entrepreneurs will give lectures on launching new businesses at elementary, junior high, high schools and universities across the country and eventually contribute to increasing the number of aspiring startup founders.
The agency currently has information about some 100 entrepreneurs on its website. It aims to offer information on 100 times as many company founders, categorized into 10 regions: where the entrepreneurs originally came from and the place where their companies were founded.
The list will include information on entrepreneurs willing to be involved in entrepreneurship education, their company names, summaries of their business activities and company locations. The companies will span several industries such as robot development, human resource development and child-rearing support.
The agency will work on expanding the list by collecting information from chambers of commerce around the country.
Schools wishing to invite entrepreneurs to give lectures will be able to select a suitable candidate from the agency list based on regional traits and students’ education levels.
The agency is also planning to release, around the end of fiscal 2019 next March, a new curriculum for entrepreneurship education for high schoolers.
The curriculum, which lays out an education plan taking up approximately 20 hours per year, seeks to teach students unfamiliar with entrepreneurship basic ideas such as what entrepreneurship is and what a business plan is.
The ratio of new businesses among the total number of businesses in Japan in fiscal 2017 stood at 5.6 percent, lower than the rates in Western countries, which usually hover around 10 percent.
The government is aiming to boost the ratio to 10 percent or more.
