An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 struck Hokkaido early Thursday morning, the Meteorological Agency said, adding that it poses no tsunami risk.

The epicenter of the 4:34 a.m. quake is the Kushiro region in the western part of the island, originating from a very shallow focus, according to the agency.

It registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale to 7 in the Lake Akan hot springs resort, the agency said. Intensity 3 was logged in the town of Ashoro.
