An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 shook parts of Kyoto and Osaka prefectures early Wednesday morning.

The 1:17 a.m. quake originated in southern Kyoto Prefecture at a depth of around 10 km, the Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami alert has been issued.

Intensity 4 on the Japanese seismic scale to 7 was registered in the cities of Kameoka and Nantan in Kyoto Prefecture and the town of Nose in Osaka Prefecture.

A magnitude 3.5 quake struck the region about 10 minutes later, with Kameoka logging intensity 2.
