Mitsubishi reopens silicon plant where five workers died in blast

Mitsubishi Materials Corp. on Monday resumed operations at its silicon plant in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, where a massive explosion killed five people and injured 13 workers on Jan. 9.

The explosion occurred at one of the plant’s facilities when about 20 workers were cleaning a heat exchanger — a device used to cool gas containing trichlorosilane, a material used in the process of manufacturing silicon.
