Sports minister Hakubun Shimomura said Wednesday a reassessment of venue plans for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games is "inevitable" amid mounting costs, in comments that came a day after Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe announced a review.

"There is no choice but to review (the plans) within the scope of our commitments to the International Olympic Committee," Shimomura said.

Masuzoe announced a review of plans during a regular session of the Tokyo metropolitan assembly Tuesday. The IOC was informed the same day.

In Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympics, total expenses for venues were estimated at ¥153.8 billion. This included the construction of 10 new facilities.
