Restoration work has been completed on the historic Ro-mon gate at the entrance of the Takeo Onsen resort in Saga Prefecture.
Designated by the government as an important cultural property, the two-story tower has long been popular with tourists and often serves as a backdrop for their photographs.
The total cost of the renovation work, which began in December 2012, was around ¥96 million.
The gate was designed by Kingo Tatsuno (1854-1919), a renowned architect from the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) eras.
Other outstanding structures by the Saga native include the red-brick Tokyo Station building and the head office of the Bank of Japan.
The wooden gate had deteriorated in recent years and the paint was peeling off, prompting calls for its restoration ahead of its centennial anniversary in 2015.
Standing 13 meters tall, it was completed in 1915 and was designated an important cultural property in 2005.
"We hope tourists will enjoy our resort with the renovated gate as well as the hot spring, which we are proud of," a resort worker said.
