Taiwan's China Airlines has decided to run charter flights between Taipei and Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, from April through June.

The service will mark the first overseas charter flights to Iwate Hanamaki Airport, prefectural officials said Tuesday.

Round-trip flights twice a week will be available from April 17 to June 19, the officials said.

The prefecture, one of the hardest hit by the 2011 natural disasters, is seeking regular flights linking the two cities. Iwate is a popular destination for Taiwanese tourists, especially during the cherry blossom season in spring.

Travel agencies in Iwate and Taipei will each purchase half of the 158 seats available per flight, the officials said.
