A tropical cyclone in the Pacific near Micronesia has developed into a typhoon, the Meteorological Agency said Monday, marking the first time 30 or more typhoons have occurred in the same season since 1994, when there were 36.

Typhoon Haiyan was heading west at a speed of 30 kph near Caroline Island as of 7 p.m., packing winds of up to 90 kph, the agency said.
