A 19-year-old boy was arrested Friday for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death in her Yokohama apartment in what appears to be a breakup that turned violent, police said.

Shiori Shiraki, a university student, was found lying on a staircase in her apartment building in Seya Ward at around 11:45 p.m. Thursday covered with blood.

Her wounded boyfriend, whose name was not released because he is a minor accused of a crime, was lying on top of her.

Both were taken to a hospital after Shiraki's family called for an ambulance, but she was pronounced dead two hours later.

The boyfriend lives in Asahi Ward, Yokohama. The two went to the same high school but then went on to different universities, the police said. They were in a relationship but were reportedly about to break up.

The police were questioning the boy at the hospital.

According to investigators, Shiraki's family heard her cry out for help and found the two lying on top of each other covered with blood.

Shiraki had sustained several stab and slash wounds to her stomach and another cut to her face, while the boy had several stomach wounds, the police said.

A bloodied fruit knife and utility knife found near the two were believed used in the stabbings.
