Housing starts rose 6.2 percent in fiscal 2012 from a year ago to 893,002 units, the third straight year-on-year rise, the government reported.

Low lending rates and strong demand related to reconstruction from the March 2011 disasters helped increase the figure for the year ended March 31, based on data released Tuesday by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry.
