The Cabinet on Friday endorsed a trip by Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako to the Netherlands from April 28 to attend the coronation of a new Dutch king.

It would be the first official overseas visit in 11 years for the Crown Princess, who continues to be treated for a stress-induced illness. On her last trip abroad, in 2002, she traveled to New Zealand and Australia.

It is rare for the Cabinet to approve an overseas tour by the royal couple so soon before their departure. Exceptions are usually made only for urgent cases, such as a trip abroad to attend the funeral of a member of royalty in another country.

The Crown Princess plans to attend the coronation ceremony and a reception. Her participation in other events will be decided after counseling with doctors on whether she is fit enough, as well as consultations with Dutch officials.
