Toyota Motor Corp. maintained first place in Japan's Best Global Brands rankings for the fifth straight year, U.S. consulting firm Interbrand Corp. said Wednesday.

Toyota was followed by Honda Motor Co. and Canon Inc. in the 2013 rankings. The top nine remained unchanged from the previous year, while Nikon Corp. climbed two places to complete the top 10 due to increased sales of digital cameras abroad.

In contrast, financially embattled Sharp Corp. tumbled to 19th from 13th place.

Interbrand began compiling the annual rankings in 2009 by examining the financial data of domestic companies whose overseas sales exceed 30 percent of their total.
