An Egyptian driver was killed and a Japanese man was seriously injured Sunday after their car overturned on a road linking the cities of Aswan and Abu Simbel in southern Egypt, according to local police.

The car, with three other Japanese tourists, overturned after its tires burst, according to the police.

The four Japanese were heading for Abu Simbel, known for its ancient temples carved out of solid rock at a site on the west bank of the Nile.

The Japanese Embassy in Egypt said it is still confirming the incident.
