Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan and several of his election campaign staff were taken to a hospital Thursday after his campaign car scraped posts on the center divider of an intersection in Fuchu, Tokyo, police said.
Kan and the campaign staff are believed to have sustained minor injuries, the Metropolitan Police Department's Fuchu police station said.
Kan is running on the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's ticket for Tokyo's 18th district in Sunday's House of Representatives election.
Thursday's accident is the second mishap involving DPJ leaders campaigning for the Dec. 16 poll.
Last month, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda lost his balance as he tried to climb aboard a vehicle while campaigning for the DPJ in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture. Supported by his aides, Noda managed to avoid injury.
