A 63-year-old woman was crushed to death Wednesday when the elevator she was getting into suddenly ascended with the doors open at the hotel where she worked part time in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, police said.

The elevator, made by Swiss firm Schindler, began moving even before the woman, Toshiko Maeda, touched any buttons in the 2:50 p.m. accident at the hotel, run by the Apa Group, the police said.
