Nintendo Co. said Thursday it will launch its Wii U video game console in Japan on Dec. 8, featuring a tablet computer-like controller with a touch-sensitive panel.

The device, equipped with a controller called the Wii U GamePad that enables players to play games on a television while the controller displays linked images, will be offered at ¥26,250 for an 8-gigabyte model and ¥31,500 for a 32-gigabyte model, Nintendo said.

Some new game titles, including one from the popular "Super Mario Bros." series, will also hit the market Dec. 8, the Kyoto-based company said.
