JFE Engineering Corp. said Thursday it has been commissioned by the Environment Ministry to conduct a feasibility study on a power generation project using urban waste in Yangon.

The company will undertake the work aimed at combating environmental pollution and developing eco-friendly power generation methods in Yangon with an eye toward securing related business in the promising Myanmar market.

Under the project, JFE will work out ways to produce electricity using heat generated during waste incineration and from biogas.

Yangon generates 1,600 tons a day of urban waste. The city's waste is currently dumped in landfills without being treated.
