OSAKA – A 27-year-old police officer has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenager while off duty after getting her drunk at a beach in Osaka on Tuesday, local police said Thursday.
Masaya Nagata, a senior officer of the Osaka Prefectural Police’s Fuse station, who was arrested Wednesday, has owned up to the allegation but said it was consensual sex, according to police.
He was visiting the beach in Kaizuka on Tuesday afternoon with four other off-duty policemen aged between 22 and 30 on a holiday trip. Two of the other police, aged 22 and 25, are also suspected of molesting another girl by touching her breasts and kissing her.
The officers were having a barbecue and drinking on the beach when they got to know three girls.
Nagata approached one and sexually assaulted her on a rubber raft on the beach after getting her to drink “shochu” distilled liquor and plum wine, according to the police.
Kaizuka police were called in after a local tourism board was alerted by a beach visitor about a man possibly getting a woman drunk in order to molest her.
A 23-year-old officer who was with Nagata informed police that he told Nagata not to go “too far,” but that he wouldn’t listen. The officer was not drinking as he was the designated driver, he told the police.
“If this is true, it is a truly regrettable case,” Yutaka Katagiri, director general of the National Police Agency, said Thursday.
