MMC begins U.S. Outlander output

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has begun production of the Outlander Sport, a compact sport utility vehicle, at its plant in Illinois, ending the model’s export from Japan to the United States.

Mitsubishi Motors will also make the U.S. plant a hub for exports to Russia, Central and South America and the Middle East, and plans to produce about 50,000 units a year at first with about half of them for export, MMC said Tuesday. It plans to increase the yearly output at the Illinois plant to about 70,000 vehicles in the future.
