Gunma Prefecture will accept and help dispose of debris in Iwate Prefecture created by last year's earthquake and tsunami, according to a basic accord reached Monday by the two sides.

Gunma's move is in response to the Environment Ministry's call on local governments nationwide to help dispose of massive amounts of debris left in the Tohoku region following the March 11, 2011, disaster.

Iwate's tsunami debris-disposal accord with Gunma is the fourth of its kind with another prefecture, following those with Tokyo, Akita and Shizuoka.

The conditions for acceptance include radioactive cesium levels below the central government-set maximum allowable limit of 100 becquerels per kilogram of debris.
