Police have arrested a 32-year-old man Wednesday evening on suspicion of stabbing another man during the evening rush hour at a crowded subway station in Tokyo's Shibuya district.

Tomohiro Watanabe, from Asaka, Saitama Prefecture, has been charged with attempted murder after he admitted stabbing the 53-year-old newspaper deliveryman Monday with a survival knife because he "became angry" after being shoved by the victim, the police said.

The victim was severely wounded after being stabbed to the right side of the torso and behind his ear at around 6:15 p.m. while descending an escalator at Shibuya Station to the platform of Tokyo Metro Co.'s Fukutoshin Line.

Watanabe has denied intending to kill the victim, according to the police, who released security camera footage of the alleged assailant on the escalator and the platform following the incident.
