Kazakhstan rare earth project OK’d

Visiting industry minister Yukio Edano and his Kazakh counterpart, Asset Issekeshev, have agreed to expand a joint rare earth development project in Kazakhstan during bilateral talks.

The agreement reached Tuesday in the capital, Astana, will double imports of dysprosium, a rare earth element, from Kazakhstan to around 60 tons under the bilateral project.

Japanese manufacturers consume some 500 to 600 tons of dysprosium annually in the production of electric vehicle motors and other products.
