The city of Matsudo will distribute pumpkin seeds derived from those taken into space by a Japanese astronaut to about 2,000 elementary and junior high schools in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

In a meeting with Matsudo Mayor Kenya Hongoya at City Hall on Thursday, Naoko Yamazaki, 41, said she wants to send the children “seeds of hope” for their shattered region’s recovery.
