The Meteorological Agency on Sunday warned of heavy snow and strong winds in eastern Japan and the Sea of Japan coast through Monday, and said lightning and gusts might also pose risks from wide swatches of the northeast to the west.

A low-pressure system with a strong cold air mass as frigid as minus 36 was expected to head from western areas to the Hokuriku region through Monday morning, the Meteorological Agency said.

Another low pressure system was expected to develop Sunday night in Kanto and move northeast. The agency projected that up to 40 cm of snow could hit Tohoku and Hokuriku by Monday morning and warned of avalanches in mountain areas.
