Russian ballerina receives honor

The Japanese Embassy in Moscow held a ceremony Tuesday to bestow an honor on Maya Plisetskaya, the prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater for many years, in recognition of her contributions to the development of ballet in Japan.

Dubbed the greatest ballerina of the 20th century, the 86-year-old Plisetskaya is known for her fondness for Japan and has visited the country about 40 times.

She was honored with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

After the ceremony, Plisetskaya said she is hopeful the Japanese people will courageously rebuild from the March 11 disasters.
