An international film festival to held in Tokyo this Saturday and Sunday will screen 21 documentaries from nine countries that focus on how to maintain water resources threatened by growing demand from economic globalization.

"While demand for water is rising in the face of population growth and economic development, water shortage is affecting poor people around the world," the organizers of the International Water Film Festival 2011 said. "There still exist people who cannot get easy access to water, and it has been pointed out that the number of such people is increasing."

The issue is of concern even to Japan despite its plentiful rainfall, "as the country imports huge quantities of agricultural products that are harvested using a lot of water," they said.
