Beijing leaned on Tokyo to release a Chinese fishing boat skipper arrested this month for allegedly fleeing after his vessel was ordered to stop in Japanese waters, and warned that “an anti-Japan demonstration could occur (in China),” diplomatic sources said.

The request for the early release of the Chinese skipper was informal, but was still made through a “relatively high-level” diplomatic channel, one of the sources said.
