Three people were killed on a remote southern island Friday by an apparent tornado that destroyed a house in the town of Tokunoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, police said.

The suspected twister blew two men and a woman into a field about 100 meters away from the house, they said, adding that all three were confirmed dead after being taken to a local hospital.

Prefectural police identified the victims as Kotaro Yoshida, 66, who lived in the house, his sister, Taeko Yoshida, 71, and Nobuhisa Abe, 70, an acquaintance.
