Nine out of the 14 members of a subcommittee of the Lower House Audit Committee said Thursday they favor cutting spending on construction and maintenance of housing for national public servants.

Only one member said the budgeted money should be approved while the remaining three called for an end to the housing project for public workers and one argued for its reform.

The outcome came as Yoshitaka Shindo, the subcommittee's chairman, called for discussions on whether it is necessary for the government to provide housing for civil servants or whether it would be cheaper to offer a housing-related subsidy.
