Beaches face nuke readings

The government will examine radiation levels in assessing water quality at bathing areas in seas, rivers and lakes amid the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Tuesday.

The new inspection category will be included in the water quality criteria of the Environment Ministry, he said.

While local governments have already started their own checks of radiation levels in the waters ahead of swimming season, Edano said: “It will be difficult for them (to introduce the radiation level criterion). The central government is required to present the guidelines after hearing from the Nuclear Safety Commission.”
